Today’s Bike Ride

Map for the day
Distance: 34.91 miles Time: 4:00:00

I just needed to get away today and boy did I! I haven’t been to the far east side of the city in a while and decided today was optimum for that. My intention was to get out around 8 am but I did not get away until after 9:00. Oh well.
I went through two speed traps, one city the other county. They were writing the tickets today. I went up and opted for the Hahn Arroyo path that ends at Sandia High School. It’s a fairly nice ride – not busy at all – the only drawback is stopping or at least looking for cars at all the overpasses. Still it was nice since I hadn’t been that way in a while. From there I just followed the signs along Claremont (ish) the rest of the way up. At Marie Park I made the mistake of resting for a couple of minutes in the shade in the grass. After about an hour and 20 minutes of basically going uphill – my legs were not liking me or what I had been doing to them.
I made it up over Tramway and took this photo looking West.
Albuquerque looking west from Tramway
Those hills in the distance are where I was taking the last photos from!

It took me an hour thirty five minutes to get up to Tramway and Menaul which is an average of about 9.3 mph. I’m not upset at that slow speed seeing that it’s just under 15 miles – UPHILL 🙂
Going back could have been much faster but I was really not into going downhill so much.
Around Market ABQ area I started searching for a Keva juice or someplace that would have some sugar-filled carrot juice! Nope. I went down to the Pavilions where I knew one was. Wheat grass shot and a carrot juice – that should rev me up?!
I went on down to the cemetery and had a little reunion. There was a very popular burial today with about 75 cars. I cleared some weeds, made my peace and went on. I ended up going down Broadway and passed the Medical Record Storage Facility that burned a few months ago – 1.4 MILLION records, LOST. That would suck. It was mostly old UNM Hospital records from before 2005. With living through a business fire, it kind of reminded me of a lot that I would have rather forgot.
I continued through Old Town – very busy today – and off to the Bosque Trail and back up to the house.
That last hill by the house, I couldn’t force myself to ride up that hill – had to walk so I’m a bit bummed about that.
I had figured maybe 29 miles or so – but those extra miles really do make a difference when you are not riding as often as I wish…
I’ll probably pass out tonight early and I’m betting that my legs will be a bit on the sore side in the morning – it was SO worth it though

Map for the day
Distance: 15.07 miles
This ‘once-a-week’ bike riding is for the birds! Ugh! I’m working on rearranging my schedule to accommodate more riding….
Today I just wanted to get out before the rains came. I hadn’t been up towards the volcanos with the camera – something that had been missing for about a month…
The yellows and browns are replaced with various shades of green! Not the deep green of the east but comparatively – green.

It was a nice ride – I was having too much fun taking the photos that I was afraid I’d be out all day.
Great ride.
Tomorrow I get to go to the Dr. to see what this cough thing is all about – again…

No real intent this morning – just to get out of the house before the sun warmed up the pavement too much!
I just kind of just meandered places, went up the big hill up Unser to the top of Volcano Cliffs, then around to Paseo and back down the Bosque Trail. Lots of joggers out this morning…
This was the view looking east on Paseo del Norte from the bluffs…

My original plan was to head up towards the volcanos – maybe not all the way in the big loop around them but maybe just to the top of one of them and back down. My lungs are still not the healthiest and with all the rain we’ve been getting I kind of thought it would look nice from up there.
Heading up the hill was a bit strenuous but I made it okay. I got to the top and turned around….
Rain coming from the South and the East!
Rain coming from the East!
I was being followed by the rain clouds! The ones coming from the south were heading right towards the house. The ones coming down from the mountains were a ways away but still kind of ominous looking. No lightning – which was nice. I don’t mind rain, I don’t mind getting wet. This day was just not the day to go through all that.
I opted to turn back and head back to the homestead. I wasn’t home ten minutes and it dumped.
Kind of glad I turned back when I did. A couple of guys passed me on my way down, them going up and I’m pretty sure they got drenched. At least they were on the trail…

Today’s Bike Ride

Map for the day
Distance: 13.82 miles
This weekend it is supposed to get over 100 every day – Friday 100, Saturday 102, Sunday 103. If it’s going to be this hot in June – imagine what August will be like? Ick.
I hopped on the bike around 7:45 am to beat the heat and had no idea on which way to go. I started out and… ended up going south on the Bosque Trail down towards the factory and back around. It was wonderful.
Coolest thing on the ride was a coyote crossing the bike path with a squirrel in his mouth! I wish I had the bike cam on! Lots of riders were out for the Albuquerque Century ride. As I went to work later, I felt sorry for them as it was almost 100 degrees by then. Happy I was not one of them…
Here’s some shots from the ride. The last photo I’m not sure if that’s a crane or not, but he was happy eating some minnows that were supposed to have been ‘saved’ with this little area he was in.

It’s been really warm but a strange crispness in the mornings… so cool that there have been balloons most every day!
Balloons In May? Sure!
This was just a quick ride to help get ready for all my walking in a couple of weeks. Must try to take advantage of this…
This was the moon over the volcano cliffs, just looked kind of cool…

Today’s Bike Ride

Map for the day

This ‘once-a-week’ thing on the bike is not helping me. I think it’s making me ramp up my calorie intake but then only riding once a week doesn’t exactly help the lb’s. Must work on that…
Today I wanted to get out before the heat and think I started about 8:15 am or so. It was great bike riding weather!
Another beautiful day in ABQ - these are the Sandias to the East
Today I thought I would go help my sister set up her swamp cooler. She has been saying that she was just one step away from having it finished so I thought I would go see how that was going. She had it all done so to not make it seem so worthless of a trip, I helped fix a leaky toilet. I received some turnovers and hashbrowns so it was all worth it. Her turtle came out to visit me while I was there, she came with the house and is pretty funny.
I needed to investigate how much gym memberships are in our area and figured that today was as good of a day as any. First stop, Riverpoint. Not exactly friendly people there and really kind of expensive. They go a bit crazy saying that the price is MUCH cheaper if I fall into a ‘group’ – employer, military, student. I don’t, and they don’t have a middle-aged-white-guy category. Damn.
Next stop was going along the bosque to Defined Fitness. Almost half the cost of Riverpoint and again the people were not so friendly. Let me qualify that one, the workers were not exactly friendly but the people coming and going were MUCH more polite than the other club. I needed to get somewhere else so I didn’t stop by the other Planet Fitness that’s nearby. I’ll hit it sometime during the week.

Today’s Bike Ride

Map for the day
TOTAL Distance: 13.82 miles Time: 1:35:00 Average Speed: 8.73 mph
Distance Up: 7.05 miles Time: 1:00:00 Average Speed: 7.05 mph
Distance Down: 6.77 miles Time: 00:35:00 Average Speed: 11.6 mpg

Yup. I needed another bike ride today. The afternoon winds are still crazy but not as ‘they’ had predicted.
I also so some pictures from last weekends’ wedding and my gut made me even more self conscious – as if the 11 year old girls did give me enough of a complex two weeks ago! Argh.
The volcanos were calling my name today so I went up that way. When I got to the apex up by Paseo del Vulcan – that’s my last turnaround spot before the ride goes from 12 miles to 27 miles. The winds had picked up and I opted for the short ride.
The other surprising thing is that there were more paved areas than before. That makes me feel like they are trying to develop parts of it. That seriously impacts my long term plans for my B & B….
Here’s some pix for today…

I was going stir crazy from not being on the bike – a mix of a lot of work hours and too much wind! But today…
I hadn’t really wanted to go to the river again but my legs and bike just kind of took me to that direction.
I went down to the river’s edge and mucked around in the mud. That was not my intention but by the time I had noticed that it was sticky mud – it was too late!
Down on the banks of the Rio Grande!

I took some nice photos but was covered in mud. There were also SO many mosquitos! My calves are covered with about 50 bites on my left leg and 20 on my right. Stupid bugs… I came upon a recently used campsite/home of a homeless person. Their area was trashed. It made me want to call it in if not only because of the filth and trash. Yuck.
I continued to my ponds and the turtles were out so I snapped them.

Continuing south, I went more in the bosque instead of on the trail. It was nice through there. I am always amazed at the runners through this part of the city. I think I would be a bit spooked to be there by myself as there are still a lot of homeless ‘campers’ in the area. Sure enough, coming out by the drainage ditch was another camp of two or three men.

I started back home and opted to go to Montano and up.

It felt SO good to be outside and not be blown around by the winds.

Today’s Bike Ride

Map for the day
Distance: 11.85 miles
After waking up to a cranky family – strike that. After my family waking up in poor mood – a bike ride was my escape!
The day is beautiful – again. I really had no idea on where I wanted to head today so I just hopped on and started riding. I was thinking the other side of the volcanos but then just kept meandering north through the neighborhoods. A few texts and phone calls later I just decided to follow the open space are along the city’s Petroglyph Park. It was kind of fun – very leisurely.
Along the Petroglyph Park
At the Boca Negra park area I continued taking some photos:
Along the Boca Negra Canyon in Petroglyph Park

I continued up and around to see an area up off of Universe where it had been a busy building area two years ago. No new houses and no new developing going on. 😦
I continued along the dirt paths and took some more photos. I saw a lady walking with her dog a little further south than I was and went to go see what was there and…. ended up right back where I had started!
Just south of Paseo del Norte - looking east
Just south of Paseo del Norte - looking west
It was kind of funny to come full circle like that.
Now it’s time to mow the lawn again and take care of some stuff in the yard before it gets too hot. Maybe I talk my son into coming outside as well? Doubt that…
