A closet bar had collapsed in the spare bedroom and I felt it was time to re-hang it. In the bottom of the closet was a large, heavy, green nylon bag with big ol’ black straps. I instantly recognized it as my first “traveling” computer. In 1991, Sunnee was a student at NMSU and Apple had a “program” where students could get a discount on computers. I spent what I remember to be around $1,000 for this computer and something like $400 for the second Stylewriter inkjet printer. I mean, she – the student – purchased the computer
I was doing concerts pretty heavy during this time and I carried that computer on planes, to the darkest offices of downtown venues, in trailers, in tents – everywhere. We were cutting edge in that day as far as technology was concerned. Our settlements appeared professional and as long as I had power – life was good. I remember showing other promoters and even bands how to set up the computer as we were all using the hand-filled “long sheets” prior to this.

It served it’s purpose quite well. I used Microsoft Works for spreadsheets, databases, and a word processor. I created show flyers, set-lists, business cards and more using Aldus Freehand 3.0 – before Macromedia – before Adobe!
Anyway, Jaeden wanted to see it and wanted to plug it in. Personally I think he wanted it to be an old, terminal-type, computer that he has seen in movies. It started up!!! It even had the correct date – the time was off by an hour and about ten minutes. It was funny so I made a couple of videos.
This thing came with 2 mg of memory and I remember that I was doing some quite impressive flyers, etc that would max out the memory. I purchased an additional memory stick for what I remember was around $200 AND I had to get a special tool – a long handled allen wrench to crack the case! That was my first time cracking open a case and putting memory in. Oh, I should have stopped back then….
It was funny to compare what I was using back then to what the iPhone had evolved to:
Monochrome to Millions of colors
Mouse to Touchscreen
External Modem to internal Wireless and Bluetooth
OS 7 to OS 10
27 MB hardrive and 4 MG RAM to 4 GB (or 8 GB) storage
Over $1000 to $500 (or $600)
I think I will do a posting of my history of computers. I’ll be interested in all of yours as well!
